Three connected figures emphasizing unity and shared purpose, the winning design for the Chemistry Department’s identifier graphic.

Gabrielle Solima, a GCC student, submitted the winning design for the Chemistry Department’s identifier graphic. The contest design theme was ‘The Curious World of Chemistry: Then and Now.” According to Debbie Leedy, GCC Chemistry Department Chair, “The design captivated the judges with its thoughtful symbolism, meaningful narrative, and seamless connection between chemistry, community, and creativity.” In describing her design Gabrielle stated that the graphic was “mainly inspired by GCC's culture of community and how chemistry has a role in not only our institution but also our lives as a whole.” This theme is reinforced throughout the design through the use of GCC colors and the imagery of three connected figures emphasizing unity and shared purpose. The first two figures, whose heads are represented by an atom and a molecule, embody the connection between chemistry’s past and future, symbolizing the bond that chemistry forms in the world.
