GCC Welcomes Ambassador of Guatemala

The Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States, Hugo Eduardo Beteta, participated in a Town Hall event at Glendale Community College on Thursday, February 5th, 2026.  Dr Tiffany Hernandez, president of GCC, welcomed Ambassador Beteta, who then spoke about United States and Guatemala relations plus the issues and challenges facing Guatemala. A question-and-answer period followed Ambassador Beteta’s remarks. 

Ambassador Beteta currently serves as the Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States. He has also held the following positions; Director of the Economic Commission for Latin America, Regional Office for Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, General Secretary of the Inter-American Development Bank, Minister of Finance, Guatemala, and National Secretary of Planning, Guatemala.  He has attended and earned degrees from the following schools; Macroeconomic Management, Harvard University, Ph.D. Development Economics/Planning, M.I.T., Master's in Regional Planning, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Master's in Civil Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a Bachelor's in Science of Civil Engineering, Universidad Rafael Landivar, Guatemala.

The visit was made possible and organized by Arizona Representative Tony Rivero and the Government Relations team. Representative Rivero is the chair of the Arizona International Trade Committee and is a proud GCC alumnus. 

In addition to Dr Hernandez and Representative Rivero, individuals who welcomed Ambassador Beteta to GCC included; Dr Kimberly Britt, Executive Vice-Chancellor and Provost for Maricopa County Community Colleges, and Donna Davis, Governing Board Member for the Maricopa Community Colleges, as well as GCC students, faculty and staff.
